Delta Dental of South Dakota Announces Planned Leadership Transition
PIERRE, S.D. — September 15, 2026 — The Board of Directors of Delta Dental of South Dakota announced today a planned leadership transition that will bring Bob Sutton to the company as executive vice president on December 1, 2026. Sutton will become president and CEO in April 2027, succeeding Jeff Miller, who is retiring after 26 years with the company.
“Bob Sutton’s deep experience, strong business ties, and proven ability to lead organizations and deliver sound business and health outcomes make him well suited for this role,” said Monty Bechtold, DDS, chairman of the Delta Dental of South Dakota Board of Directors. “The board has full confidence in Bob’s leadership and ability to continue Delta Dental’s reputation as a trusted partner and health advocate.”
Sutton has more than 20 years of experience in the health care and philanthropic sectors, with a background spanning health care, business and nonprofit leadership. Most recently, he served as President and CEO of Avera Health from 2018-2023.
Prior to that, he served in roles ranging from human resources for the health system to regional hospital president at Avera St. Mary’s in Pierre and Gettysburg. Before working at Avera Health, he served as president of the South Dakota Community Foundation for nine years.
“I am incredibly excited to join a company where mission is central to its work,” said Sutton. “As I looked to continue my career, I knew I wanted to be part of a purpose-driven organization, and Delta Dental is a perfect fit. The company has an excellent reputation, and I look forward to building upon Delta Dental of South Dakota’s strong foundation with a fresh perspective. Our customers, providers, members, and employees will remain at the heart of everything we do as we work to improve oral and overall health for every South Dakotan.”
Sutton earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master of Public Administration from the University of South Dakota.
Sutton will succeed Miller, who is retiring following 26 years with Delta Dental of South Dakota, including the last four years as president and CEO.
“We are grateful for Jeff’s 26 years of dedicated service to Delta Dental of South Dakota and his leadership as CEO,” Bechtold said. “His commitment to the organization has made a lasting impact.”
The planned leadership transition reflects Delta Dental of South Dakota’s commitment to continuity while continuing to evolve to meet the changing needs of its customers, providers, members and communities.
