The South Dakota State Fair is days away!
That means carnival, concerts, and lots of fun exhibits and activities. It also means great food, like the Pork Butt Battle, the Chili Challenge and oodles of vendors with tasty treats.
We can’t wait to dig in, but it’s important to keep teeth top of mind. Plaque and tooth decay shouldn’t deter you from enjoying all of the fair fun! So what’s a festive smile to do?
Remember these tooth-friendly tips:
While it may be tempting to enjoy a second or third funnel cake, remember: more sugar, more problems. High sugar consumption feeds the bacteria that cause plaque, which can form cavities.
If you have a sweet tooth, soothe your sugar cravings. Choose fruit over candy, or frozen yogurt over ice cream. If you’re a meat lover, choose lean meat, like chicken. It contains vitamin B3, which combats bad breath.
Say “H2O-no” to sugary drinks and hydrate with water instead of soda. Water washes away the acids that can erode tooth enamel, and promotes saliva production.
Your best defense against tooth decay is to brush and floss away all the treats you ate from a full day of fun and food!
Help your kids make healthy choices and have fun at the same time! Catch our puppet plays “Candy, Cookies & Pop, Oh My!” and “Brush the Germs Away” in the Arts & Education Building at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3 and Friday, Sept. 4.
