Our history
Delta Dental of South Dakota was established in 1963 pursuant to SDCL Chapter 58-39 'Nonprofit Dental Service Plans. Since then, we've become the state's leading and most experienced dental benefits company.
As a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization, we care about the people and communities of South Dakota. We provide dental benefit plans to employers, families, and individuals to protect smiles and keep them healthy. And we invest in programs and initiatives to improve oral health and access to care.
1963 - 1974
- Delta Dental of South Dakota is incorporated
- Our student dental accident plan is introduced
1975 - 1984
- Sunshine Food Markets becomes our first SD-based group customer
- Iroquois & Midland become our first school district customers
1985 - 1994
- Rate stability guarantee is introduced
- DeltaUSA enables us to serve multi-state employers.
- Scott Jones becomes CEO
1995 - 2004
- We're selected to manage dental benefit claims for the SD Medicaid program
- Our Foundation (Philanthropic Fund) is established to support our mission
- Our Dentist Loan Repayment For Service Program begins
- The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile begins treating underserved kids
2005 - 2014
- The Smile Mobile joins the Care Mobile to treat even more kids
- Individual and Family plans are introduced
- The Circle Of Smiles Program begins providing preventive care and education on South Dakota Reservations
2015 - Present
- Two new mobile dental clinics replace the original trucks
- Our PPO Network is introduced
- The Health through Oral Wellness benefits program is introduced
