As a dental assistant your primary responsibility is to provide chairside assistance to the dentist. You are also responsible for taking x-rays, patient charting, equipment sterilization, greeting patients, preparing for treatment, and back-up support for other staff.
Although the position is based in Pierre, South Dakota, working in our Mobile Program will mean traveling Monday to Friday for 40 weeks of the year.
This unique position requires someone who works well in a team, is dedicated to serving others - especially children - and has excellent communication skills and multi-task abilities.
Ideally, you have graduated from an accredited dental assisting program or have equivalent experience and training. However, we will train a promising candidate.
In return, Delta Dental of South Dakota will provide an excellent salary and benefit package and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children every day.
It's Monday morning and the sun is rising over the state Capitol as you board the company van with your team in Pierre to follow the 40-foot mobile dental clinic to a small town with limited access to dental care.
Although you spend many hours on the road, each trip is a rewarding adventure to help as many kids as possible.
When you arrive at your destination, you're greeted by a smiling local site partner who describes the situation to the team. There are 75 kids who need dental care, with several in varying degrees of pain. Some have struggled to eat for a long time, and many have trouble focusing on anything but their pain.
By Friday, you and your team are ready to head home, and you reflect on how many kids you've helped in just four days.
A dental hygienist on your team screened each child's oral health, teaching them how to use their new toothbrush properly. It's a lesson they will remember forever. A few of the kids have been referred to surgery by the dentist, but the rest were cared for by your team on the dental truck - ending their pain.
There were too many smiles to count and a few tears. But nothing tops the thanks you got from an 8 year-old named Charlie who was so happy he beamed when he got his new toothbrush. He explained that he won't have to use his older brother's toothbrush now that he has his own.
You know you aren't changing the world, but in that moment you changed Charlie's world. That's why we do what we do. Not because it's a job, but because it's our mission. We're dedicated to improving oral health across our state.
