Caring for Smiles 

The Caring for Smiles program is intended to increase access to care for individuals with developmental disabilities in a typical dental office setting.

To participate in the Caring for Smiles program and be eligible for enhanced  services:
  1. General providers must have training in techniques for providing care to patients with developmental disabilities.
  2. All eligible servicing and billing provider’s National Provider identifiers (NPI) must be enrolled with South Dakota Medicaid.
  3. Providers must describe relevant education, training, and experience to participate in the program.
  4. Providers must read the Caring for Smiles Billing & Policy manual
Participating providers are eligible to provide enhanced services in a dental office or extended care facility:
  • Up to two fluoride applications for adults.
  • One additional prophylaxis yearly for children or adults.
  • Behavior management.
  • A house/extended care facility call (per location).
  • Recipients can qualify for periodontal root planing and scaling, full mouth debridement and periodontal maintenance.
  • Recipients with heavy bruxism can qualify for occlusal guards.
